I want to register for a domain name and also host my website. There are several cheap options available that throw in free POP email etc etc, and then there are some well-known websites that are a tad costly and provide no extra features. So which one should I go with?

I think that 1and1 and netfirms are best domain registrars that offer great services, like DNS control, free WHOIS privacy, email account, etc.
I have few domain names that registered with them, it is the cheapest price that I can find among the domain registration market. Now 1and1 offers .info domain at $0.99/year.
