Why do i have to pay 10 dollars per year at yahoo and 3 dollars at some other company, for a domain name? It’s just the domain name right? i’m not talking about email or hosting services. When you register a domain name www.something.com You get the same thing at every company, right? so what does it matter if i get it at yahoo or at whatever place else?
Also, is it maybe so that you can’t get email and hosting at a registrar if you didn’t get the domain name from them?

The difference is in service. Some registrars may offer hosting or other services along with the domain, while other registrars will often only give you the domain name itself without hosting. Some of the cheaper registrars will also register the domain name to themselves, and not to you! This is a tactic they use to keep you from moving to another registrar because if they own the domain, you can’t transfer it. Some registrars also provide more than 2 nameservers. If you’re going to register a new domain name, do it through one of the companies that have been accredited by ICANN ( http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/accredited-list.html )
Domain names are just the beginning you choose from multiple popular extensions, to protect your personal WHOIS information with private domain name registration, and renew, transfer, and backorder domain names. Many of our online solutions — including Web hosting — even include free domain name registration. And you can buy the domain name from trusted website & giving u a perfect service. I found a website http://www.tucktail.com/ where we can check the domain name availability also
Domain name Is the Website name Domain name Registrar is Like the site http://www.tucktail.com/
only difference is price.
The price and some of them offer whois privacy, webspace and other stuff in their price. I usually just go through mydomain.com
