If you’re just getting started in Internet Marketing or any Web-related activity, you probably have lots of questions about Website hosting. There are many options available and monthly fees range from a few dollars to a hundred dollars or more. And you definitely don’t want to make a choice and then realize shortly after that you should have gone with something different – moving sites can be a pain. So how does a newbie figure out what’s right for their needs? Read on…
Shared Hosting

The first type of hosting you’ll find is shared hosting. Shared hosting means that you are given a block of hard drive space on a server that houses other accounts as well. You are sharing the server’s resources with dozens or even hundreds of other customers. And if the shared hosting account allows you to host multiple Websites, this means that there can be thousands of Websites living on this one server.

Let’s look at the good things about shared hosting. It is the most inexpensive type of hosting, which is a major plus for those just starting out. It usually includes a control panel (most often cpanel or plesk) which makes it easier to configure things on your hosting account. You often get an assortment of script installers (Fantastico is one of the more popular ways of providing this) which allow you to add a blog, a shopping cart, a guestbook and other options to your Website.

On the negative side, using shared hosting means that your Website is, to some extent, at the mercy of other sites on the same server. If another site is running a script that uses a lot of the server’s memory or processing power, it can slow down or even interrupt access to the other sites on the box. A good hosting provider will usually catch this problem and resolve it with the owner of the offending site, but it can still cause unnecessary headaches. Another potential problem is with spamming. If someone else on your server is sending out a lot of spam e-mail, the server’s IP address (the unique address of the server on the Internet) can be blacklisted by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) meaning that email sent from your Website might not get through, even though you aren’t the one spamming people!

Shared hosting is a good way to start if your Websites will be just HTML pages without any major scripts running, or if you don’t plan to send out a lot of email through the mail server. The pricing can’t be beat, but you have to be aware of the limitations and potential pitfalls I’ve outlined above.

One shared hosting provider I’d recommend is:
Omnis Network
Virtual Private Server/Virtual Dedicated Server

A step up from shared hosting is the VPS or Virtual Private Server (also called Virtual Dedicated Server or VDS). VPS hosting is similar to shared hosting in that you share a physical server with others. The big difference is that the server is outfitted with something called virtualization (Virtuozzo is one of the most common solutions used). Virtualization basically splits up the server’s resources into defined and dedicated blocks. Whereas with shared hosting, another user’s site can hog the physical server’s resources and bring all the other sites to a crawl, with VPS you get a certain amount of RAM and a certain percentage of processor usage that is dedicated to your sites. Similarly, each virtual server, or “chunk” of the overall physical server usually has it’s own IP address, thus reducing the potential for your IP being blocked because of someone else’s spam.

On the negative side, the cost of a VPS solution is usually significantly higher than a shared hosting package. Expect to spend about $40 to $90 a month. Look for coupons or specials that will either reduce your monthly cost or increase the level of resources assigned to your account without increasing the cost. And speaking of resources, make sure that you get a minimum of 128 MB of RAM (256 MB is strongly recommended). You also want to look for “burstable” resources, meaning that you can “borrow” unused resources beyond your dedicated limit for short periods of time. Another thing to watch out for is that many of the cheaper VPS packages do not come with much, if any, management of your virtual server. This means that you are responsible for installing any scripts you need (including a control panel in some cases). Unless you are a major tech geek willing to learn a lot about server configuration, try to find a managed VPS service that includes an already installed control panel (again, cpanel and plesk are recommended). It will save you a lot of headaches. Also look for WHM (Web Host Manager), which allows you to create sub-accounts for all of the domains you want to host.

Recommended VPS/VDS providers:
EasyCGI VPS Hosting
midPhase VPS Hosting
Dedicated Server

Hosting your site or sites on a dedicated server means that you are the only customer of the hosting company on a given server. You have the entire server and all its resources to yourself. No one else to bog down the server with complex scripts, no one else to get the IP address blacklisted for spamming. Just you. It sounds great, but the cost ($100 per month and up) is often prohibitive for many folks, especially those who are new at Internet marketing. Additionally, while you can sometimes find good deals on a dedicated server, there is usually a catch. That catch is that you take full responsibility for the software that is running on the box. You are responsible for updating to the latest version of the Apache web server, the latest version of PHP, the latest version of mySQL, etc. You are also responsible for making sure that security holes are patched so that your server doesn’t get hacked. In short, you probably have a lot to learn before you are ready for this type of responsibility.

That said, there are managed dedicated servers available, where someone at the hosting company takes care of some or all of these responsibilities. Of course, this costs even more money.

I don’t recommend a dedicated server for anyone just starting out, unless you’re a network admin who just quit his or her job to pursue the work-from-home dream that Internet marketing promises. Otherwise, steer clear until you have made enough money to pay for the fully managed dedicated server or to hire your own server admin.

So what should you do if you’re just starting out? I’d recommend starting with a good and inexpensive shared hosting provider until you learn the ropes and get comfortable with Web hosting. Once you’ve got some experience, move to a VPS solution. A smart way to go is to look for a hosting company that provides both shared and VPS plans – they may be able to help you move your sites if and when you need to upgrade your plan. (Both EasyCGI Hosting and midPhase Hosting – see links above – offer shared and VPS plans – check them out.)

Finally, the best tip I can give you is to make sure you understand what you’re getting in your hosting plan. Check the list of features against what you plan to do with your sites. If you are planning to run an ASP script, don’t sign up for Linux hosting – you need Windows hosting for ASP, in most cases. If you are planning to run a PHP application, make sure the plan you sign up for supports PHP (most do, but the point is to be diligent in checking your requirements before you sign up).

A good hosting provider can be a valuable asset to your online business for years to come. A poor one can be a major obstacle to success. Follow the advice I’ve provided here and you should be in good shape.

Are you a frustrated site owner? Have you ever thought about a website strategy of using sub-domain name or add-on domain? You want to have many different types of projects that you want to run separately but your domain name is not compatible?
You are really stuck about this issue and the moment you think about it you feel like throwing your computer out of the window? Hey, don’t do it! I have good news for you. It ensures that your projects are through without any problems.
You have one website strategy that allows you to operate those projects separately as websites within your primary domain name. You can register a new, expired or premium domain names and add it to your existing website. In fact, you can use this website strategy in marketing your online business.
Why am I saying that you can use it as a website strategy in marketing your online business? You see, the good thing of buying an expired or premium domain name is that they have been already in use for some time. This means that they are popular among surfers, and again they are listed on various directories. This also means that search engines value them.
You won’t spend any bucks and time trying to market your online business so that it becomes popular or for it to be ranked well on the search engines.
There exists a clear distinction between a sub-domain name and an add-on domain name. When you have an add-on domain name, it is like having a separate website with its own content. It has its own URL. There is a fee charged for directing it to your online business.
Sub-domain name on the other hand has a URL linking to your primary domain name. This means that it doesn’t have its own URL hence it is not operating as a separate website with its own content. There is no fees charged for directing it to your online business.
Before buying an expired domain name or a premium domain name to use as your add-on domain or sub-domain, you should appraise it first.
Five Appraisal Qualifications to Consider
1. Appraise the type of extension. A good premium and expired domain name should be the one with a dot com extension.
2. A good expired or premium domain name should have few reputable relevant outbound links and many reputable relevant inbound links.
3. These domain names should be listed to many relevant directories that rank well on the search engines.
4. Premium and expired domain name should qualify the good traits of a domain name such as being short and easy to memorize.
5. They should not be the ones that were used previously by a spam site. Your site will be regarded the same if you use them.
Now you know this website strategy, go ahead and use it.

Right! You are a happy owner of a holiday home in a sunny (or not so sunny but nevertheless scenic) place. Congratulations! That was a wise and pleasant investment (if you did your homework well). Now you are looking to rent your place sharing your joy with holidaymakers and generating some income from it. Where do you start?

Among many ways to advertise your home, a personal rental website is probably the simplest and the cheapest one. It is more suitable for internet-savvy owners, but hey – you are the one if you are reading this article! All it requires is some of your time along with love towards your property which you already have!

Where shall we start? Domain name, of course! Indeed a very important bit of your website.
Choosing name
Our primary goal is positioning of the website as high as possible in Google search results. We will be choosing a domain name with this in mind.

Although a domain name is not the main factor affecting website position, experts agree it does have influence. And if a domain name helps you jump a few positions higher than your competitor why not use this opportunity?

In order for a domain to fulfill this goal it needs to be keyword-rich. At best the domain name should be the exact phrase a holidaymaker searches for. Exact means exact, i.e. no additional words in it and same word order as in the search phrase.

How do you know which keyword phrases related to your holiday home potential guests search for? Thanks Google there is an excellent tool for that: Google Keyword Tool.

The tool is easy to use and gives you a list of phrases related to the phrase you entered along with search statistics. Two important things to note:

1) At the top of the page where it says something like: “Results are tailored to English, United Kingdom Edit”, click “Edit” and set the language and country to match your target audience. Unless you decide to target specific countries or languages other than English, set it to: “English, All Countries and Territories”.

2) Select “Match Type” to “Exact”. Only this setting will give you accurate search numbers for keywords.

Now enter “italy villas” into the keyword box and hit “Get keyword ideas” button. Make sure “Match Type” is set to “Exact”. Sort the results by “Approx Avg Search Volume”.

You got the list of phrases people search for every month and that are related to your holiday home. Our goal is to find phrases that are free in the extension we are targeting (more about extension later) and that are searched for most often.

You can go through the list now, top to bottom, and build a shortlist of phrases that are suitable for your holiday home website. Or better click on “Download all keywords as .csv (for excel)” and open the downloaded file in Microsoft Excel.

You can try other phrases for your property, for example “italy rentals”, “tuscany homes”, etc. For each of them repeat the above step: save results as .csv, open the file, cut and paste the data to your first spreadsheet so that you have all the results in a single excel document.

At this point you have a long (or not so long) list of domain name candidates in a single excel spreadsheet. You can sort it by “Approx Avg Search Volume” and build a shortlist of names. Remember our goal is to find phrases that are free in the extension we are targeting and that are searched for most frequently. Thus it’s now time to move onto extension!
Which extension?
.com – is the best extension for your holiday home website you can get, however the bad news is all the good names (read: all you can imagine) are taken.

.net – is a good global alternative to .com if .com version is not available.

The above two extensions target global audience, worldwide that is. However what if the majority of your guests come from one country? Registering a domain name in this country’s extension is a good idea then. To name a few, .co.uk and .de are the top popular ones you may want to target.

And now a sweet and important bit about country-level extensions. Google gives slight prevalence to local websites (assuming more influential factors being roughly equal). Consider an example. Let’s assume the two websites ItalyVillas.co.uk and ItalyVillas.com have equal rank and keyword relevance to ‘italy villas’ search phrase. However since ItalyVillas.co.uk has got a more local extension and is hosted in the UK it will show higher in the results presented to a UK-based holidaymaker. Just remember that locality is less important than website ranking and therefore provides advantage only if your website rank is comparable to the ones of your competitors. Plus you need to host your website in the country you are targeting for the locality to work in full.

.eu – heard of it? Yes it exists and available for registrations by Europeans. Not a bad choice for targeting European audience. And it has still got a lot of good free domains to grab.

Anything beyond that, e.g. .org, .biz, .info, .me, .mobi (did you know these exist?) is usually considered 3-d grade and best avoided. However, having said that, search engines do not penalize any exotic extensions, so you can still give them a go. It’s just that your website name won’t look “professional” in potential guest’s eyes. Also users may forget your exotic extension and type .com instead.

At this point you should have a list of domain name candidates along with extensions you want to target. Now it’s time to check what’s available!
Checking availability
Before you dive into exciting world of domain name discovery, a word of caution: do NOT under any circumstances check the availability of names on any website except for trusted ones. Why? – I hear you asking – because there are nasty people out there who write nasty programs and affiliate with shady domain checking websites. Their nasty programs automatically in real time sniff the names you enter and grab any good ones even before you get a chance! This happens within minutes. Stories from real people who lost their ideas to such shady websites come out every other day. So be cautioned.

I recommend this tool for checking domain availability: DomainTools Whois or DomainTools Whois bulk for multiple domain check. This site allows checking of country-level extensions plus exotics: Moniker Whois bulk. These places are known to be safe. (I am not affiliated with these sites, the recommendations come from my own knowledge and experience)

Copy paste your domain list along with extensions to a bulk-checker above and hold your breath.

You can now see what’s available. Pick the domain name with the highest monthly search volume, available in the best extension and..
Register it!
Where? My favorite registrars are Namecheap.com for anything except .eu and Internet.bs for .eu. They offer best price/value ratio in my opinion. (Again I am not affiliated with these websites)
How many?
I know you want a lot now! A lot of websites on different domains all advertising your holiday home. Or you just discovered a stack of good domains – all perfect for your holiday home – and struggling to stick with only one.

An important advice here is to NOT duplicate your website on different domains. This is of absolute importance. Otherwise all of your websites will be penalized by Google or excluded from the search index completely (will not show in the search results that is). So don’t do it.

What you can do instead is having one main website on a single domain with other domains pointing (redirecting) to it. Use “301 Redirect” for that, this option is usually available on the control panel of your hosting account.

You need to be aware of different languages used in creating a website; that is easy to access and browse through for the average web-user and have sufficient knowledge of web standards compliance. It is tremendously hard to find a good domain name that’s short, easy to remember, and relates to your website, business, or product. In fact, by the end of the week you could publish a highly enticing report and offer it through your website (in exchange for a newsletter subscription or some other form of lead capture).
Computer companies like Dell and Gateway allow their customers to custom build PCs on their website. Henry’s website is a contented rich site where you can get free and objective information on mastering all aspects of law firm marketing. Search engines send out spiders or robots to evaluate the words you have on your website.
The costs of hosting your new domain property is also relatively inexpensive, ranging from $10 to $40 per month, depending on the company where you buy hosting and the features you would need with your website. Simply having a website will not mechanically result in visits to your website, no matter how compelling the content.
Most likely the work does not come with any of these things and either will your website if it’s designed by a part time website designer or someone offering cheaper services. A few days later you get complaints about some other question and you again react quickly to fix the website.
Possibly you would like some help in writing proposals, designing a latest website, or sending out press releases. You can find freelancers to take on just about any other non-administrative project you can think of – designing your website, writing a business plan, sending out press releases etc.Doing freelance graphic designing without having your own website is suicide. One week, for instance, you could be networking, another designing a leaflet, another distributing it, and another updating your website. Website redesign firms use high speed connections while designing their original store so they rarely see the increase in page load times.
You can assemble customer information online, post your detailed privacy policy on an easily-accessible page on your website and ask those giving you their information to read it. Before you hire a website designer/developer or SEO expert ask for some case studies of sites they have optimized. If you get a chance, check out their new website.
Be the content creator, not the distributor – Instead of publishing other people’s news on your website think about how cool it would be to have your own feed in print on thousands of other sites.
If a business is serious about breaking into foreign markets, it is imperative that the website is translated into languages of target areas. Website’s reach, when marketed properly, is far greater; and with brilliant web site design, your business can even look bigger and better than your top competitors in your industry.

I must admit I’m a neophyte in the internet world as well as in the ABC’s of the so-called “state-of-the art” website domain. As a matter of fact, I got my Vista laptop only last December as a Christmas gift to me by my eldest daughter who was working in a hospital in England. I had my SmartBro internet connection installed only this January 2009 and I just learned few simple RSS links, searches, and browsers. Since it was my first time in the internet I took pleasure of browsing for some work-at-home jobs, bloggers, article writing opportunities, on-line marketing and other business offers. In this end, I came across with some luring proposal of free membership MLM or affiliate programs wherein I gave way to almost every offer of this kind. Reading some of their fascinating promises of easy huge earnings “without leaving your home” , I was gradually conditioned to believe that this was the best offer so far and I started working on it until I became a member Affiliate. I believe I did follow my lessons I learned from the articles of the so-called affiliate gurus – on how to send links to different websites “to expand my clout”, send invites to friends, and other so-so in the affiliate system. I did work on it for almost two months now and I still notice no changes in my Google Adsense Display Report.
Then came this company ads which claims; ”greatly increases your internet presense”. “….Affiliate Program offers free training as well as domain names, website hosting, and a home business income opportunity. The … affiliate program is 100% FREE with your … membership. Our top affiliates are producing well over $10,000 monthly!”
I’m never against their system and their systems claim but I was just lured by this particular ads/offer. ….”you can “test drive” your very own website for 7 days absolutely FREE of charge. After your 7 day rial you could continue to build, keep and use that website to promote anything you want for the amazing price of… Only $10.00 Per Month.”
“And here’s the good news. You CAN safely try this out for 7 days and cancel it before the 7th day easily if you feel it is not right for you and you will not be charged or have to request for a refund. I will show you an easy way.”
Then I signed up to this 7-day test drive for my so-called very own website hoping for the promising downlines and expected help as a member of this affiliate program for free. Two days before the 7th day trial end wherein I saw no progress in my Adsense Report of Earnings I sent message to the company requesting for the cancellation of my domain account but I was told back that they only allow members to cancel it by phone… for security reasons. I could not do so however, since I’m in different time zone and it is expensive to call for USA for this particular purpose.
Then I browsed for some related FAQs about the alternative and I came across to this answer:
Q: BUT, what if I am in a different time zone? and it is Expensive to Call USA? How can I Cancel?
A: (The company) did mention in their website that, for security reasons, they only allow members to cancel by phone. BUT, since this is a very valid reason, you can actually email (the company) to explain this reason to them and they will cancel your membership for you; they may even call you to confirm your cancellation. To do this, you can log into your members area to find the contact form and use this contact form to contact (the company).
When I tried to log in I could not get access to my members’ area. There always appears a message of denied access because of “too many log in, please contact telephone number…..”. So why should I rather contact them for a Contact Form if I could contact them for cancellation? The problem itself is “I’m in different time zone and it is expensive to call USA”, and this is my reason why I chose the alternative!!
Having this difficulty, my 7-day trial drive had lapsed and after just about two weeks, there is already a charge of P4,000.00 (Philippine currency) in my credit card for their so-called domain. This Peso amount is equivalent to $95 (U.S. dollar) more or less, which is very different from the $10 a month offer for the domain. Don’t know how they compute it!
Just for this reason, and also for security reasons, I was forced to have my very own credit card bank account cancelled, to my own detriment. I will not blame anyone for what happened because it’s my own fault. I just became too careless just like anybody else and I’m a little bit ashamed to people who best knew my caliber. Please be careful signing up.

Almost everyone knows about the benefits that commerce has gained with the Internet. Not only are there advantages for sellers, but buyers are benefited by the ease of shopping and the wide variety of information that is available. With the use of the Internet anyone can offer products or services for sale to millions of prospective customers and clients. The beauty of online marketing is that you can do it for very little cost when compared to a physical store. Also your website will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week even while you are away from your computer. For the most part your online business runs itself.

This knowledge has encouraged many people to start their own website and work from home. However, a problem that all these webmasters must face is how to drive traffic to their site. You can build a well thought out and convincing website, but if you don’t get visitors you cannot make any money.

There are numerous methods that can be used to develop traffic for a website. Many of these techniques can be very time consuming and expensive. There is good news for those of you who would like to get a significant increase in your traffic at very little cost. This method involves expired domain names and the use of redirection. Using this method of website promotion you simply purchase expired domain names that match the theme of a website, or websites, that you currently promote and use redirects to send the traffic to your existing URLs.

When a new domain name is registered the purchaser pays for the registration in one year intervals – usually one year at a time. Throughout that first year, or even several years, the webmaster will promote the website and build backlinks and develop traffic flow. Sometimes, when the registration period is up the webmaster will fail to pay for the renewal. There can be many different reasons for this, but generally they just lose interest or get involved in other projects. The important thing to know is that once the domain name expires it will now be available for others to register.

There are literally thousands of domain names that expire every day. Most of these domain names will already have an established traffic base, backlinks, and search engine listings. With so many domain names expiring every day it can become difficult to locate the domain names that you need. Fortunately there are services available that you can sign for that will help you to locate the perfect domain names. You may search their database of domains available and even sign up for email alerts that keep you informed you know about pending domain name expirations.

If you want to take full advantage of the great benefits that can be realized with the use of expired domain names you will need to research the domains available and learn how to tell which ones are the most valuable for you.
