August 25, 2011 — Telecommunications provider Verizon Communications announced on Thursday it has acquired cloud software developer CloudSwitch in a deal that will simplify the move to the enterprise cloud and help to increase industry adoption. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

June 27, 2011 — Confirming previous rumors, Verizon cancelled plans last week to build a massive data center near Laramie, Wyoming, as part of its strategy to scale up its infrastructure to enter the cloud computing market, according to a report by the Laramie Boomerang.

Telecom Verizon Completes Acquisition of Cloud Host Terremark

A screen shot of Verzion’s website (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- Telecommunications provider Verizon ( www.verizonbusiness.com ) announced on Monday it has closed its acquisition of cloud hosting provider Terremark Worldwide ( www.terremark.com ). According to the press release, the acquisition was completed via a short-form merger under Delaware law, eliminating the need for a Terremark shareholder vote.  Verizon first announced back in January it would acquire Terremark for $1.4 billion, which breaks down to about $19 per share. Soon after the deal was announced, some shareholders filed a class action lawsuit against Terremark that argued that the company failed to run a thorough sale process to fetch the highest offer in the acquisition

Verizon Cancels Plans for $4 Billion New York State Data Center – Web Host Industry Review

A map of the proposed area for Verizon’s data center (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Verizon has pulled the plug on its plans to build a $4 billion data center near Buffalo, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge . Verizon announced its change of plans on Thursday, after problems with a lawsuit from a local resident and delays in acquiring the land.  The Wall Street Journal reports that the land owner’s attorney, Arthur Giacalone, says Verizon used the lawsuit as an excuse to back out of New York.  Data Center Knowledge says that Mary Ann Rizzo, the owner of land adjacent to the proposed site, “filed suit against the Niagra IDA and six other agencies because she felt a proper environmental review was not conducted.” Verizon first announced plans for its New York data center in October 2010. Once completed, the project would have represented a total investment of about $4.5 billion.
