IBM to Open Two Cloud Data Centers in Japan

July 14, 2011 — IT giant IBM announced on Thursday it has expanded its cloud computing services for customers in Japan and in the Asia Pacific region with the opening of a new IBM Cloud Data Center in Japan and a dedicated data center for LotusLive, IBM’s cloud collaboration service. The new data centers will extend IBM’s cloud delivery network of cloud computing centers.

Japanese .ME domain names get renewal fees waived after disaster

Following a similar announcement by the .ORG registry a few days ago , the .ME Registry announced that they will also help domain name holders located in Japan by waiving renewal fees for one full year for all names that expire or will expire between March 11 and April 30, 2011.  Read the press release after the jump : “The recent devastating disasters in Japan have left many registrants without the ability to renew their domain names.  The .ME Registry would like to alleviate concerns amongst Japanese .ME domain name holders by waiving renewal fees for one full year for all names that expire or will expire between March 11 and April 30, 2011.   “This is a small gesture we can make to help show support for our friends in Japan,” said Predrag Lesic, executive director of the .ME Registry, based in Montenegro. “In the weeks following this tragic crisis, truly heroic stories of survival and commitment have surfaced in Japan

.ORG Registry Waives Renewal Fees For Japanese Registrants Affected By Recent Disaster

[news release] In light of the recent disasters that have devastated Japan, .ORG, The Public Interest Registry (PIR) today announced a plan to waive renewal fees for Japanese domain name holders who are unable to renew their .ORG domain names. Together with PIR, more than 15 participating Registrars have committed to automatically renew for one year at no cost the .ORG domain names that would unintentionally expire due to the inability of the owner in Japan to re-up their registration.  Affected names will include those with expiration dates within the March 11 – June 11, 2011 period.

Japan Energy Shortage Could Affect Data Center Uptime in Summer

A screen shot of the Japan Data Center Council website (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- Data centers in the Tokyo-area have so far managed to endure the energy crisis following last month’s massive earthquake and tsunami, but the lack of fuel supply due to the shutting down of nuclear reactors could prove to be taxing during the high demand period of the summer, according to a report by Datacenter Dynamics . Following the Japan earthquake and tsunami on March 11th, the government implemented rolling blackouts to cities in suburban Tokyo after the country’s nuclear reactors were shutdown, in an effort to provide enough generating capacity for the entire country. As previously reported, the Japanese government said it would give prioritizing power and energy supply to data centers .
