Twitter.com Investigated by Office of Fair Trading Monday, January 10, 2011, 9:59:48 AM The UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has proclaimed an interest in social networking and microblogging site Twitter.com. In a press release on the matter the OFT stated that celebrities and influential people that are paid to favour or promote certain products on sites like Twitter are breaching fair trading laws by deceiving the public with their relationship to the product. OFT says that any promotional activity “must clearly identify when promotions and editorial comment have been paid for, so that consumers are not misled.” Celebrities can earn thousands of dollars or pounds via paid-promotional tweets; The Guardian says how Snoop Dogg can earn a reported $3,000 (£1,900) for a single Tweet, while Reality TV star Kim Kardashian can earn around $10,000 for Tweeting to her 5.6 million followers.
