Japan Energy Shortage Could Affect Data Center Uptime in Summer – Web Host Industry Review

A screen shot of the Japan Data Center Council website (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- Data centers in the Tokyo-area have so far managed to endure the energy crisis following last month’s massive earthquake and tsunami, but the lack of fuel supply due to the shutting down of nuclear reactors could prove to be taxing during the high demand period of the summer, according to a report by Datacenter Dynamics . Following the Japan earthquake and tsunami on March 11th, the government implemented rolling blackouts to cities in suburban Tokyo after the country’s nuclear reactors were shutdown, in an effort to provide enough generating capacity for the entire country. As previously reported, the Japanese government said it would give prioritizing power and energy supply to data centers

Control of Web by Government Increases, Including Delaying New gTLDs: FT

Government control of the internet is a seemingly never-ending battle between government and its supporters on the one hand, usually when it suits the supporters in their battle of choice, and opponents on the other. The Financial Times has published an article looking at the topic, starting with WikiLeaks and the “unstoppable stream of disclosures has intensified efforts by governments to exert more control over information and the complex technology underpinning its availability on the internet. From the UN to the self-governing body overseeing web addresses, countries are working to assert more authority, with some success.” One area the article looks at is new generic Top Level Domains, with the FT saying that governmental complaints have been one of the main reasons for the delays in their introduction

Who Controls the Internet?

In an article looking at cybersecurity, The Financial Times notes that in 2009 “US Defense Secretary Robert Gates declared cyberspace to be the ‘fifth domain’ of military operations, alongside land, sea, air and space.” In 2010, General Keith Alexander “is the first boss of USCybercom, the United States Cyber Command, in charge of the Pentagon’s sprawling cyber networks and tasked with battling unknown enemies in a virtual world.” In his confirmation hearing, the FT says, General Alexander sounded the alarm, declaring that the Pentagon’s computer systems “are probed 250,000 times an hour, up to six million per day”, and that among those attempting to break in were “more than 140 foreign spy organisations trying to infiltrate US networks”. Congress was left with a dark prophecy ringing in its ears: “It’s only a small step from disrupting to destroying parts of the network.” This 3,500 word article also claims that “there are areas where American control over the administration of the web is slipping.

Oracle CEO “Speechless” Over Hiring of New HP Head: Reports – Web Host Industry Review

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Oracle chief executive officer Larry Ellison has expressed his disappointment at Hewlett-Packard ( www.hp.com ) for hiring former SAP CEO Leo Apotheker as its new CEO and president. “I’m speechless,” Ellison wrote in a message to the Wall Street Journal and other major news outlets . “HP had several good internal candidates…but instead they pick a guy who was recently fired because he did such a bad job of running SAP.” Prior to his hiring by HP, announced Thursday, Apotheker was at German enterprise software developer SAP ( www.sap.com ) for more than 20 years, and was promoted to co-CEO of the company in April 2008.

Registrar eNom to screen bogus drug sellers

In a victory for the fight against criminal networks distributing counterfeit and adulterated drugs over the internet, the Financial Times is reporting that eNom, the world’s second-biggest registry, is to begin screening customers for unapproved drug sales. The report notes that under pressure from security professionals, ICANN and the White House, eNom “last week quietly retained LegitScript, a company that vets internet pharmaceutical concerns to make sure they are licensed to do business in the US.” To read this report in The Financial Times in full, see: www.ft.com/cms/s/2/9d0bd394-c41c-11df-b827-00144feab49a.html
