The German country code Top Level Domain passed the 14 million registrations mark Monday cementing its position as the world’s largest.

The Italian ccTLD, .IT, has passed the two million active registrations mark this week with there being 2,001,192 registrations as of today. The registry has announced that in the past five years, the number of .IT domains has doubled with .IT remaining the fifth largest ccTLD in Europe after .DE (Germany) who has 13,905,243 registrations, .UK (United Kingdom – 8,802,095) and .NL (The Netherlands – 4,094,078) while .EU (European Union) has 3,285,310.

The number of domain names registered across all top level domains (TLDs) around the world grew by three million in the second quarter of 2010 to take the total number of domain names registered, or the global base of domain names, to 196.3 million as of the end of the second quarter 2010 (June), according to the latest VeriSign Domain Name Industry Brief. The ongoing increase in registrations is likely to see the 200 million registration mark passed sometime in September or October

[news release] EURid has taken a closer look at the distribution of .eu registrations among its registrars and has found that 65 % of domain name registrants chose a registrar from their own country, 18 % chose a registrar from a different country in the European Union, and 17% chose a registrar located outside the EU.

As previously reported, the four millionth .NL domain name was registered this week. On reaching the four million mark, SIDN also announced they are the ccTLD with the highest number of registered domain names per person in the respective country with almost one domain name registered for every four of the 16.8 million residents of The Netherlands. For those interested in the trivia of who, when and where, the four millionth domain was supposedly registered by Tom ter Heerdt from Didam in The Netherlands who registered the domain name tomgoesusa.nl about midday on 18 August.

Official statistics on the SIDN website, registry for .NL domain names, shows that the four millionth registration was passed this week. Currently there are 4,006,563 domain names registered making .NL the fourth largest ccTLD. The largest ccTLD is .DE (Germany) with 13,794,130 registrations followed by .UK (United Kingdom) with 8,654,260.
