Are You Ready For Colocation? – TheHostingNews.com (press release)

February 10th, 2011 By: THN News Data Center Content Sponsored by Extreme Networks Data Centers In the web hosting world, however, colocation (also commonly referred to as colo ) refers to the practice of locating your own information technology infrastructure – servers, storage, networking gear, and more – into a data center.  While many hosting providers lease or resell server space that someone else owns, colocation arrangements are a bit more rudimentary.  They supply the internet exchange , network access, security, power, air conditioning, and basic onsite monitoring and support and your organization would supply the server hardware, network switches and other components required to connect your overall system together, and then the operating systems and application/web software required to operate your solution.  If you are seriously considering a move to a colo arrangement, it is best to first get references of others who have made the shift with environments of similar complexity.  Does the hosting provider respond effectively in the case of an emergency?  In the event of power or network failures, have their redundant/failover measures kicked in and performed?  Once you have narrowed to a handful, depending on how critical this move is to your business, many opt to perform a site visit at the facility to verify in person that the security and disaster recovery measures are what are claimed in marketing and sales materials.  It is also good to put a face with a name by meeting your admins or hosting management team in person.

The Cloud Hosting Curve SMBs – TheHostingNews.com (press release)

February 8th, 2011 By: THN News SMB Dedicated Content Sponsored by StrataScale Server Hosting and Cloud Hosting The information technology and web hosting industries have become infamous over the years for a hype curve on all new technologies.  Typically the curve begins when a buzzword technology or solution is introduced by a handful of companies and adopted, sometimes, by an even smaller niche.  The promise of these technologies may be so great, however, that bloggers, media, and other companies drive the hype curve to such a level that the technology can go nowhere but down.  Then, after it seems like the hype curve has crashed back to earth, we often find that some of the technologies end up truly being game-changers…just perhaps not on the schedule of the early hype.  An excellent example of such a curve in the past decade has been the smartphone and the mobile technologies, as a whole.  We’ve gone from a decade of hype, shattered expectations, and more hype to suddenly a world where it seems virtually one has an iPhone/Android/Blackberry and…yes, there is an app for whatever you need.  One recent technology that has also rode the hype rollercoaster is cloud computing and, more specifically for the web hosting industry, cloud hosting .   The Small-To-Medium sized business (SMB) market segment stands to benefit greatly from the cloud hosting model as time goes by and the hosting model becomes more commonplace, yet there is a feeling among many that this is a technology that was overhyped and is now under-delivering.  This, actually, couldn’t be further from the truth.

Web Hosting Provider Infinitely Virtual Adds New Cloud Hosting Plan

A screenshot of Infinitely Virtual’s recently upgraded control panel, InfinitePanel (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Web hosting provider Infinitely Virtual ( www.infintelyvirtual.com ) announced on Thursday that it has added a new standard cloud hosting plan.  This launch comes two weeks following the company’s upgrade of its control panel InfinitePanel. According to the company, the new standard plan enables customers to “purchase pools of resources, share them among servers, and then prioritize access to those resources.” Infinitely Virtual says its cloud standard plan instantly create servers from pre-configured templates for Windows Server, Linux and Turnkey Linux Appliance and then upload to a cloud plan.  To ensure high-priority applications have the resources they need, users can specify each server’s priority, according to Infinitely Virtual. “With our unique cloud hosting plans, our customers can purchase and allocate resources dynamically among their servers without having to invest in their own virtual infrastructure,” Adam Stern, president and CEO of Infinitely Virtual said in a statement.  According to the statement, CPU, RAM, storage and bandwidth can be shared among numerous virtual dedicated servers
