US Government Seizes Millions-Strong Coreflood Botnet

A screenshot of the court filing agains the 13 “John Doe” operators of Coreflood (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report posted Wednesday on the Wired Threat Level blog, and a Thursday report by security blogger Brian Krebs, the US Justice Department and FBI were granted the power this week to seize the enormous Coreflood botnet , a decade-old web of infected PCs that reportedly included millions of machines, and is allegedly responsible for the theft of millions of dollars over that time. Most notable about the seizure is the fact that for the first time, the Justice Department sought and received permission to seize control of a botnet and send a signal to the millions of infected computers to disable the malicious software.

Supreme Court appears skeptical of California video game law

Supreme Court appears skeptical of California video game law A California law that prevents the sale of violent video games to minors may end up being struck down in the US Supreme Court as justices appeared to question its constitutionality. At issue is the First Amendment right of the video game developers, which may be infringed by the application of the law. Justices suggested that if California was to ban violent video games, then it would also need to ban other violent forms of media.

German Court Says Host Not Responsible for Proactively Monitoring User Content

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Dusseldorf Higher Regional Court has ruled that a Web host is not responsible for proactively checking user-uploaded content and to remove copyright-infringing material. German attorney Ulrich Reber from the firm SKW Schwarz Rechtsanwälte ( www.skwschwarz.de ) summarized the proceedings in an online commentary for International Law Office . Reber explained that a German film distributor filed a preliminary injunction against a Web host to stop the reproduction and dissemination of illegal copies of a film over which he held the exclusive distribution rights.
