Judiciary Committee Approves Online Copyright Enforcement Bill

Introduced in September by Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy and senior Republican member Orrin Hatch, COICA was unanimously approved by the Committee, and will be sent to the full Senate for consideration. (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As conventional means for “wiretapping” criminal and terrorism suspects fall silent because of the use of online communication instead of by telephone, officials are planning to call upon US Congress to further enable the wiretapping of electronic transmissions. According to a New York Times report , the proposed bill, which is not set to go before Congress until next year, will expand upon the current Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, which forces telecommunications carriers and equipment manufacturers to modify and design their equipment, facilities, and services to ensure law enforcement and intelligence agencies have built-in surveillance capabilities.  The proposed law, the Times reports, will extend authorities’ monitor ability to communication service providers
