WIPO Dispute Resolution Hits Record Level in 2010

In 2010, trademark holders filed 2,696 cybersquatting cases covering 4,370 domain names with the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center (WIPO Center) under procedures based on the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), an increase of 28 per cent over the 2009 level, compared to an increase in domain registrations of 6.3 per cent in 2009, and of 16 per cent over the previous record year, 2008. The WIPO Center is the organisation that deals with the largest number of dispute resolutions dealing with domain names

WordPress Suffer Chinese DDoS Attacks Monday, March 07, 2011, 5:47:01 AM WordPress.com was the latest site to suffer at the hands of a vicious DDoS beating when an attack “multiple Gigabits per second” strong hit it last week. In a statement released to its users, WordPress said it was “currently being targeted by a extremely large Distributed Denial of Service attack which is affecting connectivity in some cases […] The size of the attack is multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second.” It took around 4 hours to sub-side the attack and sustain the site, which is now completely stable. Sara Rosso, a representative of WordPress owner Automatic has said that WordPress is now working with it upstream providers to prevent and better deal with this kind of attack in the future

The two email addresses used in the test, and the .alordon domain, rendered in Arabic (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet infrastructure provider Afilias ( www.afilias.info ) reported this week that it is, in partnership with the National Information Technology Center of Jordan, producing the first public demonstration of an email message between two internationalized email addresses in the Arabic language, using Afilias’s new IDN email technology and the IDN TLD from the .jo registry. “With the 83 percent of the world’s population estimated to be non-English speaking, this is an important first step in bringing a useful Internet to the majority of the world’s Internet users, which were previously shut out of using the Internet in their native language,” says John Kane, vice president of corporate services for Afilias, quoted in the company’s press release. “The adoption of IDN domain names has been inhibited by the lack of technical support within email programs for internationalized addresses which would still be compatible with the global DNS system

2 Million .IT Domains While .CN Registrations Continue To Plummet

The Italian ccTLD, .IT, has passed the two million active registrations mark this week with there being 2,001,192 registrations as of today. The registry has announced that in the past five years, the number of .IT domains has doubled with .IT remaining the fifth largest ccTLD in Europe after .DE (Germany) who has 13,905,243 registrations, .UK (United Kingdom – 8,802,095) and .NL (The Netherlands – 4,094,078) while .EU (European Union) has 3,285,310.
