ICANN Leader Says Multi-Stakeholder Model of Internet Governance Threatened

[news release] The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) says all Internet stakeholders need to strive to keep Internet governance out of the hands of intergovernmental organizations. And if they fail, he warns, there could be unfortunate consequences. “Most Internet users – businesses, service providers, non-profits and consumers – would be shut out of the governance debate,” said Rod Beckstrom.

09|10|2010 5:31 pm EDT .ORG Prices To Increase April 2011 by Frank Michlick in Categories: Registries , Up to the Minute – 0 Comments In an announcement sent to registrars, the Public Interest Registry (PIR) announced that they would follow suit with the recent Verisign increases and increase prices for .ORG domains to $7.21 per domain name year on April 1st, 2011. The announcement reads: This is a notice by Public Interest Registry (PIR), pursuant to Section 7.3(B) of the Registry Agreement between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and PIR, of a price increase for .ORG domain name registrations. Effective on April 1, 2011, at 0:00 UTC, the fee charged for domain name initial registrations, domain name renewals, and for transferring a domain name from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another will be US$7.21 per domain registration year

After only three weeks since its launch, nearly 410,000 .CO domain names have been registered in more than 180 countries worldwide. Among the more than 2,500 domains to be auctioned, the three with the most applicants are Slots.co, Insure.co and Denver.co.  Other notable .CO domain names up for auction include Mexi.co, America.co, Betting.co, Vitamins.co, UsedCars.co, Happy.co, Ebook.co and Jackpot.co. “As the .CO domain extension continues to generate global demand, I suspect we will see many exciting Landrush auctions for highly sought after domain names in the coming weeks,” said Lori Anne Wardi, Director of Marketing at .CO Internet S.A.S.

Since 1985, non-state actors under Jon Postel’s leadership have experimented creating virtual national spaces on the Internet through so-called “country code top level domain names” (ccTLDs). There are 251 ccTLDs on the Internet. In 1998, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – the newly established coordination body for Internet addresses including ccTLDs – stressed out the principle of private sector leadership instead of public sector administration of Internet identifiers
