za.net offers free domain names. I’ve got a couple there. It’s a South African company, but I’m pretty sure they’ll accept international sign ups.
You domain will look like this: http://www.mydomain.za.net
I don’t know of any free hosting companies where you can have your own domain name… they all only give subdomains.
But, if you want to start a fansite, you can sign up at http://www.fan-sites.org they give free domain names and hosting for fansites or fansite design companies.
